Sri Lanka Athletics is one of the oldest members federations of World Athletics. Sri Lanka gained membership from the world body on the 21st of January 1922. However, several evidence have been found to prove that track and field competitions had been organized in colonial Ceylon with the influence of the British.
In the year 1948, for the first time, Ceylon competed at the Olympic Games and won the first ever Olympic medal at the same games by Duncan White in the men’s 400m hurdle event.
Fast forward to date, Sri Lanka has won a few more medals on the world stage with the credit of Susanthika Jayasinghe who is still the sole Asian to win an Olympic medal in a sprint event. Moreover, Sri Lanka Athletics has been able to produce several podium finishes at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Asian Championships, Youth Olympics Games and many other international events. As a single sport discipline, Sri Lanka Athletes own more than 50% of the total medals won at the South Asian Games by Sri Lanka.
Not just only producing athletes, Sri Lanka Athletics regularly conducts coach development, and technical officials’ development programs to uplift the standards of the sport taking a holistic approach.
We, Sri Lanka Athletics warmly welcome you to join hands with us to continue the legacy!
